Almost RM2bil lost in commercial crime cases this year, say police


KUALA LUMPUR: With only about a month before the year comes to an end commercial crime cases have already recorded losses of over RM1.9bil.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said from January to Nov 26, 2023, a total of 37,651 investigation papers have been opened by his department.

"Last week alone (from Nov 20-Nov 26) we opened a total of 828 investigation papers on various commercial crimes.

"Of these, 692 (or 83.6%) were related to online fraud," he told reporters on Wednesday (Nov 29).

He urged the public to be cautious when making any deals online.

The public can check the police's SemakMule website at https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my for bank accounts or phone numbers associated with previous crimes.
